| David Clarke, a FOCUS Senior Advisor, has over twenty years of management experience in large corporations and non-profit organizations focusing on information technology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, automotive, electronics, and consumer products.
Currently, Mr. Clarke serves as Chief Technology Officer for a leading non-profit organization. His work there has included initiatives in sourcing strategy development, partnership innovation, peer to peer collaboration, and RFID supply chain integration. As a civilian advisor to the U. S. Department of Defense, he has consulted on communities of practice, collaboration, and the forward integration of information in support of humanitarian relief efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also on the Talent and Learning Council of the United Way of America, the Advisory Board of the CIO Executive Council, and serves as the Chairman of the Washington Area CTO Roundtable.
Mr. Clarke began his career with IBM, where he served as a consultant, project manager, and product manager in the industrial systems sector. In 1992, Mr. Clarke joined W. L. Gore & Associates, the makers of GORE-TEX ® fabric and other high technology products. In 1995, he was named Chief Information Officer and Chief Knowledge Officer. As the first-ever CIO of Gore, he created a framework for global collaboration, integrated strategic acquisitions, and revamped product development into a knowledge driven process that enabled Gore to double its corporate revenues in three years. In 1998, he joined General Motors, where he served in several key IT executive roles, including CIO of the Midsize & Luxury Car Group. Mr. Clarke led GM to a leadership role in the automotive industry for high performance computing, reducing the new vehicle engineering process cycle time by 50%. He also created the governance structure for GM North America’s IT operations outsourcing deal with EDS and managed its $1B annual spend.
Mr. Clarke has a Master’s degree in Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. In 1990 he was awarded a commission as a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky for his service to the commonwealth as a researcher and preserver of Kentucky’s frontier history. He is a published columnist on business and technology issues and has been featured in Fast Company, Computerworld, and CIO.
